Tuning-in to the sound of success

To inform students about the nuances of sound designing and editing, the Department of Multimedia organised a special Workshop on Sound Designing Tips and Tricks on June 26, 2021 from 12:30 PM. National award winning sound designer and former Dean of Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Mr. Punkaj Seal was the guest speaker for the event.

He started off by explaining to students how soundscapes are used to generate a suitable vibe for each film. “Think of iconic films and their sound effects, the films are just as famous as their sounds. It creates an atmosphere of dread, happiness, and melancholy. That’s how powerful sounds are,” he said.

He then discussed different techniques and software resources available to ensure the sounds fit in seamlessly with the story. “For this you will need to work closely with a director. Both of you must be true to your vision. Think of it as telling a story but just with music,” he advised.

For the final part of the discussion he introduced students to the different job opportunities in the field. “Don’t limit yourself to just films. Animations, advertisements all need your expertise. So try it out,” he urged.

The session ended with a Q&A where the students got career advice from the expert.
