Women hold up half the sky. The struggle of Indian women in the past has shaped our modern society in ways that often go unacknowledged.
To restore the cultural history of the Indian women and highlight their role in society, the Central Libraries of Brainware University and Brainware Group of Institutions organised a programme in a belated celebration of International Women’s Day 2021 on March 29, 2021 at 4PM.
Esteemed scholars, including Dr Rachana Chakraborty (Professor, Department of History, University of Calcutta), Dr Rita Choudhury (Associate Professor, Department of History, University of Calcutta) and Dr Kabita Chakraborty (Associate Professor, Department of Law, Brainware University), were the guest speakers for the event and they discussed various aspects of experience of women in the past and the present.
Discussing the role of the government in improving the plight of women, Dr Kabita Chakraborty said, “The government can step in and build on the pillars of support in terms of health, education and other infrastructure to promote the active participation of women in mainstream society.”
Choudhury too agreed that this obliterating of women’s history and their dismissal from the present is an inherent patriarchal strategy. “From Vedas to the medical sciences, women have been everywhere. How many of them have found a place within history though?” she questioned. The session ended with Dr Rachana Chakraborty urging students to “use education as an empowering tool and uplift the minorities. Remember, history is a construct created by the people and you have the power to make it a fair one,” she said.
