A Long Walk to Freedom: India - multitude of cultures united by one identity, Communication Club event discusses diverse views

In an increasingly separated world, it is important to foster kinship and unity in our country. To encourage such unity, the Communications Club in collaboration with the Department of English and Literary Studies of Brainware University organised an event to discuss diverse views on the question - What does freedom mean to you?

The name of the event was inspired by the autobiography of Nelson Mandela,' A Long Walk to Freedom' to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of India’s independence on August 25, 2022 at 3 PM.

The event started with an opening speech on ‘Freedom’ as the theme of the month by Dr. Poulomi Mitra, Associate Professor and HOD, Department of English and Literary Studies. Studies. Through the course of the event the participants presented complex and diverse takes on the fundamental question of freedom in India. There was also a debate on whether or not India is ‘truly free’ where the participants reached a consensus that stressed the importance of freedom as something that encompasses all of India rather than specific groups because diversity essentially constitutes the fabric of Indian life. The main challenge that lies ahead is to build a progressive nation that is united despite its many diversities and truly democratic in spirit.

The event came to a close with a wonderful performance of ‘Aye Watan, Mere Watan’ from the popular film Raazi, by the students.
