PRA programme: Interaction between students and farmers

On June 29, 2022, the Department of Agriculture organised an outreach programme on 'Participatory Rural Appraisal' (PRA) at Kotra Gram Panchayat office. 41 students from the Agriculture department and 10 farmers from the village were present at the programme,

Kamran Nahar, Panchayat Pradhan, Kotra Gram Panchayat and Isha Saheb, Panchayat members inaugurated the programme. They were informed about the situation of the village, the pattern of land use, and the cultivation practices of different crops. The Panchayat members also highlighted their problems, needs, and the market situation.

Following this, Jyotirishwar Kumar, Assistant Registrar, Brainware University and Shrabantika Ghosh, Programme Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Brainware University delivered a lecture on 'Participatory Rural Appraisal'. They emphasised on the benefits of its techniques.

Discussion on problems and prospects of the farmers

The session was an enlightening one for the students as they got to interact with the farmers and got an idea about the reality of cultivation of the majorly cultivated crops in pre-kharif,kharif and rabi seasons in different lands.

From the discussion, the university officials tried to outline the situation at the Kotra village by highlighting the problems and suggesting means to do away with them. season. The farmers have the facility to store rainwater in the village, an initiative that has become successful in collaboration with Brainware University. This has also helped them to irrigate land in the dry season. Nevertheless, at present, market demand and efficiency are the primary problems that the farmers are facing.
