Exploring the theory of chance

Probability is the building block of most revolutionary technologies. From Machine Learning to Artificial Intelligence, probability works as the basic foundation. With the objective of making the students more knowledgeable about the fundamental concepts related to probability and statistics, the Department of Mathematics, Brainware University, organized a workshop on Basics of Probability Theory on December 21, 2020 at 4.30PM.

Dr. Debasish Dey, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University, initiated the discussion with the basic terminologies of probability theory. “Whenever we’re unsure about the outcome of an event, we can talk about the probabilities of certain outcomes. Probability is simply how likely something is to happen.” added the speaker.

Dr Dey showed the students how to solve the problems with the help of probability theory. He explained the intricacies of probability distribution and the different kinds of distributions we usually use in mathematics to solve real-life phenomena.

Dr Dey concluded the session with a discussion of the industrial applications of applied mathematics. “Probability theory is being used in all sectors, including criminology and pharmaceutical industries. So the employment sector is booming in these areas,” he said.
