Library Workshop on ‘Do Librarians need to be SMART'

Creating smarter libraries for the smart generation

In the digital age when e-book sales are on the rise and piracy has become commonplace how should libraries cope? What are the smart ways of building robust library systems? To find the answer to these questions the Central Libraries of Brainware University and Brainware Group of Institutions jointly organised a workshop on ‘Do Librarians need to be SMART’ on December 10, 2020 at 4.00 PM.

Dr Sushanta Banerjee (University Librarian, West Bengal State University) was the guest speaker for the occasion. The discussions began with Dr Banerjee’s explanation of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely) goals which librarians must adopt. “In order to make sure the library is functioning smoothly your ambitions must be big but grounded at the same time. Work on setting the little things right and the rest shall follow,” he explained.

While initiating new changes, librarians, Dr Banerjee said, must follow the A to F model, “care must be taken to master all aspects of this model from gauging the target audience, understanding their behaviour and providing interesting content, to properly evaluating their feedback and responses,” he asserted.

Dr Banerjee advised librarians to stay updated with the latest needs of the patrons since that is a surefire way of staying relevant.“The last thing you want is the shortage of funding being echoed by a shortage of active patrons. Stay in touch and work smartly,” he advised.
