World Environment Day:

"Trees are the earth's endless effort to speak to the listening heaven"- Rabindranath Tagore


Global warming has become an undisputed threat about our current very existence and the current environmental problems require urgent attention. Brainware University in its capacity as a house of learning always contributes to the creation of a better tomorrow. In keeping up with this ideal, the University organized a Tree-Plantation Programme, presided over by the honourable Chancellor, Mr. Phalguni Mookhopadhayay and the Chief Guest, Mr. KalyanRudra, Director, Pollution Control Board, Government of West Bengal, along with the whole Brainware family celebrated the World Environment Day on June 6 2019. The programme concluded with the students actively participating in planting 140 trees as a standing example of their social responsibilities.

Brainware has also taken some more initiatives towards reaching its goal of a eco-friendly campus, like the Department of Biotechnology has taken up the project of converting food waste into bio-gas for cooking, and the Department of Electrical Engineering has taken up the project of using solar power for generation of electricity within the campus, which will reduce pollution and help us ‘Go Green’.

Smart India Hackathon(2019)

Brainware students holding first prize in Smart India Hackathon Finale at SSN University, Chennai

It gives us great joy and pride to announce that Team Nebula, consisting of Team Leader Debashish Nandi(BCA), ShirshaDebnath(BCA), Twinkle Paul(B.Tech CSE), PragnaDebnath (BCA), AadityaMaity (BCA) and ShrimantaGarain (B.Tech CSE) had represented Brainware University at the Smart India Hackathon Finale at SSN University, Chennai where they bagged the 1st prize after fierce competition with teams from various reputed Universities from across the country over a period of 36 hours.Under the mentorship of Sayan Bose, Assistant Professor, Department of CSE, the team registered for the event under the project code GG1, working towards a project problem of the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India.In order to make development a comprehensive mass movement and innovate on all fronts the MHRD and AICTE have come together to organize Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2019for identifying new and disruptive technology innovations to solve the challenges faced in our country. Surpassing two preliminary training rounds the team with their pre designed android application entered the final stage after constant modifications according to the competition standards. Team Nebula, worked tirelessly to prove their mettle and reach the pinnacle of success in their said category. After a grueling period of 36 hours which challenged both their physical capabilities and their mental tenacities, Nebula were adjudged winners in their GG1 category. We congratulate the members on this momentous occasion and wish them the very best for all such future endeavours.

“Management Education is Necessary”, says Pharmacy Professionals

Pharmacy was introduced by Brainware University in 2018. The course got a huge response, and this year we are trying to improvise our syllabus for B.Pharm by involving Management education as a value addition along with their 4-years degree course. In order to understand the necessity of Management education in our Undergraduate course, we invited some Pharmaceutical industry professionals to our University campus on June 13, 2019. The seminar was organised by the Pharmaceutical Technology Department of Brainware University. The delegates were from Hegde&HegdePharmaceutica LLP, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd., ESKAG SanjibaniPvt. Ltd., Johnson & Johnson Pvt. Ltd. and also Sarva Gun AushadhiPvt. Ltd.It was a brainstorming session where many vital points came up which would help our students to become industry ready. When asked about certain areas which should be involved while teaching students, the panel advised four things – Communication skill, CRM, Team Management, and CEM (Customer Experience management).The day concluded with a footnote from our Honourable Chancellor Mr.PhalguniMookhopadhayay that students after passing out from the University should be industry ready.The University has decided to include a Diploma in management education as a value addition for the upcoming academic year. He proposed to the industry professionals to impart their experience among students and also give them a chance to work with them, to which they readily agreed.

Don't flush our planet's most valuable resource

Water is one of our most precious resources. “By 2030, the country’s water demand is projected to be twice the available supply,” the NitiAayog report reads. “[This will cause] severe water scarcity for hundreds of millions of people.” At Brainware University we are exploring innovative solutions to water scarcity that meet high standards of sustainability and profitability. Keeping in mind the increasing water demands, quality of water supply, variations in water availability and advantages of collection and storage of rainwater near the place of use and many other things, the Department of Bio-Technology of Brainware University has developed a project on Rainwater Storage for drinking. The CSR head of Srijan Realty Pvt. Ltd., Mr. DeborshiSaha visited our Brasat Campus to see our Project on Rainwater Storage for drinking & to discuss the possibilities to take it forward. Srijan Realty Private Limited is one of the leading real estate companies of eastern India. Dr. PiyushMallik, HOD Biotechnology explained and showed the project and how the project will contribute towards a useful alternative to provide a continuous flow of drinking water for all in the campus.The guest highly appreciated the efforts and showed a keen interest in the project for future collaborations. We look forward to the association in the future.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), an apex development financial institution in India responsible for fostering rural prosperity and Brainware Skills have decided to work together for rural development.

Ms.Shoba Kerketta, Assistant General manager NABARD, was pleased to have a close look at the Brainware Skills unit and to interact with students. She has praised its efforts of progressive contribution in this field. She especially mentioned Brainware's initiative named “DEESHA”, a mission to provide skill training and placement to 10,000 unemployed youth of West Bengal by 2019. She added that NABARD is looking for a skills partner in West Bengal and that they are happy to be associated with Brainware Skills as a partner.

Reliance Foundation

Brainware University Skills unit welcomed Reliance Foundation on June 27, 2019, at their Barasat Campus

Reliance Foundation is one of the largest private foundations and the Top CSR spender for three years in a row in the country. Mr.Pradip Panda, Senior Project Manager, CSR and Mr.Amit Sen, Project Manager, CSR, our guests from Reliance Foundation showed a keen interest in Brainware's endeavour in skill training for enriching the lives of rural people. Having experienced a day with Brainware, the representatives from Reliance Foundation concluded the program by expressing their interest to organize a job fair at our Barasat Campus for our students to explore better job opportunities.


Highlights of the Month

International Yoga Day

Yoga is the practice through which human beings can attain the balance between Self and Nature.

The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in his speech in the conference of United Nations, suggested June 21 to be celebrated as International Yoga Day to promote a holistic approach to health and happiness. Brainware University being a propagator of the overall growth of students and employees, organized an awareness programme and a practice session on International Yoga Day to endorse the culture of physical and mental equilibrium. Mr. Tarun Moulik, who was the instructor for that day, talked about the benefits and importance of Yoga and how it may help us to live a better and stress-free life. The students and staff were encouraged to take part in the session.

Seminar on Gender Equality and Development

Apart from academics, Brainware University has always considered its responsibility to educate its students and spread awareness about matters of social relevance and importance. In keeping up with this ideal the University’s Gender Sensitization Cell organized a seminar on Gender Equality and Development: Present scenario in Indian context at its Barasat campus on June 27, 2019.

The program got underway with Vice Chancellor, Dr. Subrata Kumar Dey introducing the topic to the audience which was followed by Guests of Honor Dr. Sudipta Sarkar, HOD of Rural Development Studies, University of Kalyani and Prof. (Dr.) Isita Lahiri, Department of Business Administration, University of Kalyani, who gave a detailed presentation on the situation of discrimination towards women and gender bias prevalent in our country. Dr. Lahiri went to the root of the topic in her investigation of the popular gender roles and how we should combat them. On the other hand Dr. Sarkar elucidated on the various social and political measures taken by our country in trying to achieve women emancipation and empowerment.

Birthday of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis

June 29 is the birthday of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the father of modern statistics in India. He is remembered as an Indian Bengali scientist and applied statistician. He just not introduced the Mahalanobis Distance, but was also one of the members of the first Planning Commission of free India. To commemorate the 126th birthday of this great personality, an event was organized to pay homage to him at the University campus. The ceremony witnessed garlanding the photo of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis by our Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Subrata Kumar Dey. Other faculty members also paid their homage to the eminent personality by offering flowers.


Students’ Corner

Brainware Skills & MJUNCTION join hands to skill students in retail

MJUNCTION, a customer-focused, technology-driven and innovative, joint venture (50:50) between SAIL and Tata Steel joined hands with Brainware Skills, and helped skill 60 students in the field of retail. MJUNCTION, which is also the largest B2B e-commerce company in India, with a business volume in terms of transaction value of ₹ 1,48,294 crore in FY19, is deeply involved in CSR activities, touching lives of thousands of under privileged. The organisation sponsored the 3-month long rigorous training of 60 students in Retail at the Brainware University campus.

The programme was a great success, with 50% of the students already being placed, while the placement target stands at 100%. On June 18, the students received their certificates for the training conducted. To everyone’s pleasant surprise, the occasion was graced by the Directors and top officials of MJUNCTION, who personally handed over these certificates to the trainees. This was indeed a matter of pride for the team at Brainware Skills.
In attendance were the Chancellor of Brainware University and the Brainware Skills team as well as dignitaries from MJUNCTION. They included, Mr. Sandipan Chakravortty, Director, MJUNCTION, Chairman for Jamshedpur Utilities & Services, who is also on the board of 6 other companies and member of The Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
Mr. Dipak Baneerjee, Director MJUNCTION, who has over four and half decades of experience in corporate and financial management, also graced the occasion.
We were also happy to have Dr. Mahul Brahma, CSR head, MJUNCTION and Ms. Piya Nandi Sr. Manager CSR, MJUNCTION with us.

Soil Sampling & Testing for Tree Plantation

To celebrate the World Environment Day, Brainware University, Kolkata organized a tree plantation program on 6th June 2019 at Barasat campus. Selection of tree plants were conducted based on the campus soil quality. Prior to this plantation program, soil sampling and testing were conducted by UG Biotechnology students under the direct guidance of Dr. Pijush Mallick, Head, Department of Biotechnology. They collected soil from four different corners of the university campus with three each replications. Following the standard protocol, soil’s physical health, pH level and EC were tested and recorded. The whole work from sampling to testing was carried out by the BSCBT students using Biotechnology Lab. As per the data generated, the research team concluded that deep rooted perennial tree plants both flowering & fruit could be planted inside the university campus.
