"Have you ever bunked classes in college with the excuse of illness?" asked Dr. Partha Sarathi Modak, CEO, BMRC Hospital while interacting with the Allied Health Science students at the seminar on 'Industry Expectations from Students and Ways to Fulfill Them'. The seminar took place on April 5, 2023.
Dr. Modak then went on to explain how there is a difference between campus life and professional life. "In the campus, you have the freedom to live by your rules and philosophy. However, in a professional setting, things work differently," explained Dr. Modak. He clarified that there is a gap between the industry and academia.
“How many of you think that a job is waiting for you after passing out of college?” Dr. Modak asked the audience. "In the medical field, everything is available in front of you. You need to identify," Dr. Modak recalled from his experience. It was an insightful session for the students.

“The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn’t have the weight of gender expectations.” ― Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, We Should All Be Feminists.
The Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Gender Sensitisation Cell organised an awareness programme on 'Gender Equality and Freedom of Trade and Occupation' on April 7, 2023. Krishna Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, Brainware University made a presentation on gender equality. Amrita Dasgupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Law, also highlighted the equality of genders in his speech.
Gender equality in India is the goal, while gender neutrality and gender equities are the practices and ways of thinking that help achieve the goal. Gender parity is used to measure gender balance in a given situation that can help achieve gender equality but is not the aim.

Innovation in investigation techniques against modern cybercrimes is an ongoing effort to stay ahead of the constantly evolving landscape of cyber threats. In this context, the Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with Department of Cyber Science and Technology organised a webinar on April 7, 2023. Yash Korat, who currently serves as the Cyber-crime investigator of the Cyber Agents, was the speaker at the session.
The primary objective of the webinar was to emphasis the present cyber threats and the procedure for the prevention of the danger of cybercrime-related activities. Korat also explained and demonstrated various kinds of threats in the digital world with examples.
In this regard, it must be noted that some of the innovative techniques that are being used to combat cybercrimes include artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), blockchain technology, and advanced forensic analysis. AI and ML were being used to analyse vast amounts of data and detect anomalies, which can help identify potential cyber threats. Blockchain technology is also used to create secure and transparent systems for data sharing and communication that can help prevent cyber-attacks.

The 'World Creativity and Innovation Day' was celebrated on April 21 by the Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Dr. Saikat Basu, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, MAKAUT was the guest speaker at the webinar.
The main objective of organising the activity was to raise awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in overcoming every challenge with innovative solutions. With his vast experience, Dr. Basu encouraged the students to do something on their own, they need to create and innovate! The ideas presented aimed to create awareness of human development through innovative solutions.
Institution Innovation Council, Brainware University celebrated World Creativity and Innovation Day to raise awareness about the crucial role that innovation and creativity play in human development. The session helped students to understand that creativity is the use of imagination, thinking, and skills to create new ideas, while innovation is the process of using creativity, knowledge, and skills to improve existing ideas or develop new products.

"We are storytellers. Using the various modes of media, we try to tell the stories about common people, make the dream and make them socially aware," Saptarshi Ray, Director of social media, Prayasam while addressing the Media Science students at a workshop on 'Mastering the Art of Short Films' on April 27, 2023.
Ray was accompanied by Manish Chowdhury, Chief Editor, Community Visual News Network (CVNN), Prayasam at the session.
A number of short films produced by Paryasam were shown to the students. The objective behind the films was made clear in the very beginning. It is the tips and techniques of the subtle craft of short filmmaking which was the main takeaway for the students.

When someone buys a pack of cigarette or any other tobacco products; what is the warning on the pack? Yes, it cautions Lung Cancer!
April is the Oral Cancer Awareness month. On this occasion, the Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with Department of Allied Health Sciences organised a session on 'The Innovative Aspects of Oral Lesion Screening' on April 27, 2023. Dr. Surajit Bose and Dr. Rakshit Shetty from KSD Jain Dental College and Hospital were present to conduct the session.
The basic idea was to make the audience aware of the fact that there are certain methods for the identification of malignancy in mouth at an early stage. Early cancer detection will lead to a high remission rate.
Now, it is up to the medical and paramedical students to shoulder the responsibility of spreading this awareness among common people and pursue effective research in oral cancer screening for its advancement.

New age women safety app, advanced CCTV analytics solution, malware analysis tool, citizen safety app for protection against cybercrimes - the KAVACH Hackathon witnessed a number of hacks related to the domain of cyber security. The Hackathon witnessed several interesting and innovative presentations from the students!
KAVACH-2023 is conceived by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) o challenge India’s innovative minds to conceptualize ideas and frameworks in the domain of cyber security using artificial intelligence, deep learning, machine learning, automation, big data, and cloud computing.

"When you talk about your dream to your friend, if the person does not laugh, then your dream is not big enough!" This single sentence from Dr. Purnendu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director, Genesis Group and Hospital was enough to grasp the attention of the audience. Dr Roy kept his promise, his session on 'The Problems and Future of Healthcare MSME' was a funny, interactive, enjoyable, inspiring, and insightful one with occasional Bollywood dialogues and scenes in the presentation to make the session more relatable to the students.
Dr. Roy highlighted the fact that the healthcare sector has the potential to generate 2.7 million additional employments in India by 2023 and emphasised the areas that can be prospective for the students associated with healthcare.

The Department of English and Literary Studies in collaboration with the Communication Club organised 'Prime Time: A News Anchoring Competition' The participants pulled off a remarkable feat with sudden reporting situations - from covering a flood to an accident, the crowd-filled Kolkata Book Fair to the inauguration of the Kolkata International Film Festival.

"We are losing confidentiality every day which means that we are also losing our integrity," said Dr. Saibal Sarkar, Senior Technical Director, National Informatics Centre while addressing the students at a session on 'Real Life Aspects of Secure Intelligent System'.
A survey by LocalCircles last year states that personal data breach is becoming increasingly common in the financial sector with 59% of citizens claiming that their data has been compromised by the loan agencies.
There are several other instances of data theft. In this context, Dr. Sarkar noted, "Before a system is made intelligent, we need to ensure that it is secure."

Highlight of the Month

It is the spirit of a sportsman that prevails! Not only in sports but also in life! The Annual Sports of Brainware University was held at Belgharia Athletic Club Ground on April 7, 2023.
This is a sporting event for the students but still, it witnessed the firm determination of the athletes. The disappointment of loss and the triumph of victory!
The sporting categories included 100 m race, 200 m race, long jump, and shot put. The day away from the worldly academics was a welcome refreshment for the students!

The MSME Development and Facilitation Office of the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise in association with Brainware University organised the celebration of 'World Intellectual Property Day 2023' on April 26. The programme witnessed a host of eminent dignitaries speaking on the importance of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection.
Dr. Sushil Kumar Mitra, Ex-Deputy Controller, CIPAM emphasised the theme this year which was the “can do” attitude of women inventors, creators, and entrepreneurs around the world and their ground-breaking work. The speakers focused on the fact that 'Women are born managers' and how their entrepreneurial ventures went unrecognized for a long time.
The inaugural session was followed by a technical session where the importance of IPR, trademark, patents, etc. was highlighted for the students.
The primary objective of these programmes is to encourage the students towards creating something new - to be job creators rather than job seekers. IPR protection is an important aspect in this case. One needs to protect his or her ideas in order to prevent others to use them without authorisation.
The keynote address was delivered by Pradip Kumar Das, Joint Director, MSME - DFO. He went on to explain the reason behind the trademark - to maintain the quality parameters. Trademark is applicable in case of an individual property while Geographical Index is applicable in case of a group. Somnath Chattopadhyay, Advocate highlighting the necessities of the trademark process.
Tarak Kansabanik, Assistant Director, MSME-DFO, Kolkata gave an insightful talk on commercialising a product and how to become an entrepreneur.

Did you know that like the Nobel Prizes, Ig Nobel Prizes which are a parody of the former are awarded every year?
These Ig Nobel Prizes are given to focus on the funny projects they take up! For instance, predicting the possibility of people colliding while walking using cell phones or how to boil potatoes in a better way!
'Extent of imagination' is the main lesson from these topics! Dr. Dipti Prasad Mukherjee, Deputy Director, Indian Statistical Institute made these valuable suggestions at the '7th International Conference on Advances in Computing and Data Sciences (ICACDS - 2023)'.
The 2-day international conference took place on April 27 and 28 at the Brainware University campus in Barasat. On the second day of the conference, Welmoed Spahr, Vice President of Publishing, Springer Nature Books was present. She interacted with the faculty members from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and discussed the prospective research areas in the various branches of Computer Science. The areas of possible collaborations with the USA were also considered.
While addressing the young audience, Vipin Tyagi, Jaypee University of Engineering and Technology highlighted the importance of pursuing meaningful research which will have an impact on society. "Did you know that a single search on Google generates around 0.25 gms of Carbon Dioxide?" Vipin Tyagi pointed out the need for environmental consciousness for pursuing research as it is going to have a deep impact on society.
The technical sessions at the conference explored the emerging areas in the field of Computer Science and Engineering. This has been a great learning experience for the students that provided them with a plethora of options for their research interests.

Brainware Advantage

Coca-Cola used to keep its formula a secret! Well, this is not a secret to many. However, now fans can be closer than ever if they visit a permanent exhibit at the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta. It was indeed an insightful experience for the students from the Department of Food and Nutrition as on April 14, 2023, they got a chance to get a sneak peek into Coca-Cola manufacturing!
An industrial visit to Diamond Beverages at Santoshpur was organised for the students by the Department of Food and Nutrition. The basic objective of this industry visit was to make the students understand the importance of supply chain management in the Coca-Cola industry. The entire process of supply chain management was explained to the students that includes packaging, manufacturing, distribution, refrigeration, consumption, and recycling.

'Vision' and 'Sight' - the discussion at first was mistaken for a philosophical one but when one wishes to work in the field of vision sciences, this becomes important.
The Indian population at present stands at around 140 crore. Almost 1/3rd of the population needs to wear spectacles, however, 47.2% of this population does not have access to spectacles which corresponds to 25 crore! These insightful revelations were made by Mr. Sreejit Sarkar, Regional Training Manager East, Professional Optometry Service, Lenskart at a session on 'World of Optometry through Lenskart's Eyes'. The event took place on April 17 and was organised by the Campus-to-Corporate (C2C) cell.
There are only 40,000 Optometrists for 25 crore people. "So, there is a huge responsibility, and with great power comes great responsibility," said Sreejit Sarkar who thinks that optometrists are 'Vision Warriors'.
Mr. Debapriya Mukhopadhayay, Head Central Team, Professional Optometry Service, Lenskart was also present at the session. He gave an idea on the Optometry industry in India. Mukhopadhayay also highlighted certain limitations of the students. "I have observed that often people are not ready to move for their job. But they need to understand that they have to work in the areas or places where the demand is huge!"

'Multimedia Magic', the sound recording studio of the Department of Multimedia and Film Studies hosted yet another recording session. This time vocalists Sharmistha Sarkar and Nandan Das recorded songs for their latest Rabindra Sangeet album. The recording was also a learning experience for the Multimedia students. They learnt about the recording process and also played an instrumental role in assisting during the whole recording session.
The vocalists were accompanied by Asitava Chakraborty in guitar, Manoj Debnath in tabla, Pijus Kanti Biswas in harmonium. It was a nice experience for artists to record at the sound recording studio of Brainware University!
Within a very short span of time, 'Multimedia Magic' has become a favourite arena among the industry professionals. Earlier, a number of song recording and photoshoot sessions took place at 'Multimedia Magic'. Retro Mix Band recorded the theme song for celebrating 75 years of Basirhat College at Multimedia Magic. The studio also organised a recitation recording session. Renowned fashion photographer Sandip Pathak conducted a photoshoot with actor Vikramjit Chakraborty at Multimedia Magic.
In this way, Multimedia Magic provides industry exposure to Multimedia students. With observing the processes and getting involved with them, the students get to learn a lot of things regarding a professional setup.

Moot court competitions prepare Law students for their everyday practice!
Our heartiest congratulations to the Moot Court team for securing the runners-up position in the Amity University National Moot Court Competition 2023. The team also won a cash prize of Rs 10,000.
BBA LLB student Samriddhi Sinha bagged the 'Best Speaker Award' at the competition. Sinha won a cash prize of Rs 5000.
We are hopeful that more such accomplishments will continue to flow.

It is indeed a 'Wow Moment' when one finds comfort in your services. Shad Fazal from the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology of our university has achieved such a 'Wow Experience'. Fazal is currently working as a Hospital Pharmacist with BM Birla Heart Research Centre & CK Birla Hospitals. He has recently earned warm words of appreciation from one of the patients, Mr. Shahab Malik.
BM Birla Heart Research Centre & CK Birla Hospitals has also issued a certificate of appreciation to Shad Fazal for providing this 'Wow Experience!

Our LLM student Avimannu Das receives the 'Young Researcher Award 2022' from the Institute of Scholars, Bangalore under Ministry of MSME and Corporate Affairs, GOI for exploring the ancient ethos in the management system in his paper titled 'Pertinence of the Indian Management System with the Traditional Ethos' published in the 'Journal of Folk Cultural Research'.
Indian ethos for management means the applications of principles of management as revealed in our ancient wisdom brought forth in our ancient texts.
Our heartiest congratulations to Avimannu for his achievement.

In this regard, on behalf of Brainware University, we extend our heartiest congratulations to our LLM 2nd-semester student Subham Chatterjee for presenting a paper on the topic 'Rights of the Indigenous People through the lens of the Indian Constitution' in an ICSSR-sponsored International Seminar on 'Contemporary Concerns of the State of Indigenous People vis-a-viz Their Existence and Survival'. The seminar was held at Dispur College in Assam.
