1st International Conference on Literature, Film and Web Adaptations: Adaptations and Appropriations

Dr. Pinaki De, Associate Professor, Raja Peary Mohan College, Uttarpara shared certain important insights with the students while delivering his keynote address at the '1st International Conference on Literature, Film and Web Adaptations: Adaptations and Appropriations'. The conference was organised by the Department of English and Literary Studies on March 4, 2023.
Rajaditya Banerjee, theater artist and filmmaker was also the guest speaker at the conference. His lecture focused on how these performing arts should cater to those at the bottom of the pyramid. In his address, Banerjee highlighted the ability to read between the lines of a text. "With this one can identify between fake news and news that is fake," he added.
A number of papers on the topic exploring various sections were also presented in the course of the conference. At Brainware University, it is seen that the students develop a knack for academic research. Furthermore, the seminars conducted by industry experts and professors from reputed organisations help the students to develop their skills.

The Department of Hospital Management organised a workshop on 'Improving the patient experience to build the customer loyalty' on March 4, 2023. Ashish Mukherjee, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Kolkata conducted the workshop.
Mukherjee himself comes from a very humble background. He had one dream - coming to Calcutta. He started his career as a medical representative. He shared his life experiences with the students to make them realise how they should approach the profession of Hospital Management to ensure the reliability of the patients.
"Qualification doesn't mean competency. Competency comes when knowledge and skills are put into action," he pointed out. He also pointed out 3 areas for patient satisfaction - clinical core, non-clinical core, and out of hospital.

Mechanical Engineering students attend a webinar on 'Fundamentals of Battery Technology Webinar'

The Department of Mechanical Engineering conducted a webinar on 'Fundamentals of Battery Technology and its Application in Modern Industry' on March 4, 2023. Dr. Brajesh Kumar Kanchan, Assistant Professor, Department of Production Engineering, PSG Colleges of Technology, Coimbatore, was the speaker for the session.
Dr. Kanchan shared the applications of batteries in modern industry, the history of Li-ion battery cell and his research work on this topic. Li-ion batteries, as one of the most advanced rechargeable batteries, are attracting much attention in the past few decades. They are currently the dominant mobile power sources for portable electronic devices, exclusively used in cell phones and laptop computers. The demand for Li-ion batteries increases rapidly, especially with the demand from electric-powered vehicles.

It was inspiring to listen to the journey of another woman with many parts. Dr. Rupali Basu, MD and CEO, Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital was present at Brainware University to conduct a seminar on 'My Leadership Journey - If I Can, You Can' on March 9, 2023. The seminar was organised by the Department of Hospital Management.
"I come from the small town of Durgapur. I studied in a Bengali medium school, but I always wanted to be a global citizen, and, in that case, language was not a bar," said Dr. Basu. She shared her childhood. Dr. Basu comes from a family of Engineers and her childhood was full of song, dance, recitation, plays etc. that shape up the psyche of middle-class Bengali households.
Dr. Basu recounts how her father taught her the importance of financial independence from a very early age. She recalled her days at medical college where she had to manage with a budget.
"By the end of college, I developed a passion for public health administration. So, when my friends were pursuing higher studies in core medical disciplines, I decided to opt for Hospital Management," she said. Dr. Basu travelled to various places across the world to pursue courses on public health management.

On March 11, 2023, to discuss the importance of goal setting process, the Campus-to-Corporate cell of the university organaised a seminar on 'Contemporary Approach to PMS - The Goal Setting Process' for the MBA students. Dhrubajyoti Majumdar, Regional HR Manager (East), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. conducted the session.

So, what was the major phenomenon during the 1990s? Healthcare revolution!
Rupak Barua, Director and CEO, AMRI Hospitals was discussing the transformation of Indian healthcare at a session on 'Post-pandemic healthcare scenario' on March 15, 2023. He informed the Hospital Management students that quality healthcare in India is comparatively a new concept - it is 30-35 years old. In the 1990s, Dr. Prathap C. Reddy founded the first corporate chain of hospitals in India with Apollo Hospitals. "Further revolution in healthcare happened post-pandemic," Barua admitted.
The vastly experienced Barua noted that the delivery system in the healthcare sector was not the way it is taking place at present. "Corporate hospitals talk about quality care," said Barua.
"When the pandemic hit the country, we were not prepared to deal with the situation. Then we realised that the gap was in the primary healthcare centres," said Barua. Going forward, Barua discussed how the budget allocation towards healthcare sector raised following the pandemic.

Brando, Boggart, Paul Muni - are they all puppets? Wondered a dismayed Arindam. Is a stage actor always superior to a cinema actor? Arindam was torn between this conflict! In 'Nayak' this conflict was ingeniously portrayed by Satyajit Ray on screen through the character of Arindam Mukherjee, a matinee idol played by Uttam Kumar!
The subtle nuances of acting were discussed with the students at a 5-Day Acting Workshop conducted by Saikat Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Department of Media Science and Journalism and President of Proscenium, the drama club of the university!

A bunch of Computer Science and Engineering students were eagerly listening to Inder Chopra, Senior Faculty/Mentor, T.I.M.E. Chopra was present at Brainware University to conduct a session on 'Career Advancement' on March 30, 2023.
"What will you do next?" asked Chopra to the CSE students at the beginning of the seminar. One of the lucrative prospects after Engineering is pursuing MBA. When asked about the requirement of MBA, Chopra received various interesting responses from the students. "We need a manager to channel the employees in the right direction," said one. "To explore the broader aspects of the job," pointed out another!
In a candid conversation with the students, Chopra made an important comment - "The efforts are higher when you need to reach a higher level!"

The sales and marketing sector of Pharmaceutical industry offers a wide scope of job opportunities to the students pursuing this discipline. Sovan Chakravarty, Senior General Manager (Retired), Elder Pharmaceuticals was the guest speaker at the workshop on 'Placement Guidance in Sales and Marketing Sector of the Pharmaceutical Industry'.
A 75-year-old industry veteran Sovan Chakravarty still believes that he is a student. In order to make the students understand the importance of implementation of theory in practice, Chakravarty referred to a quote by Rahul Bajaj. Chakravarty referred to the fact that Rahul Bajaj believes in his implementation of theory in practice. He further noted that the industry does not have any hard and fast rules to function. In these cases, his practice becomes the theory!

The area of 'taxation' was simply explained to the students by Amit Kumar Rakshit, Practicing Advocate and Tax Consultant at a workshop on 'Law of Taxation with special reference to Income Tax and G.S.T'.
'Compliance' and 'Litigation' - the two types of taxation related works that lawyers can get involved with were made clear to the students.
These frequent workshops with industry experts help the students with industry knowledge and exposure. The session by Amit Kumar Rakshit was an informative one and helped the students to get a clear idea about the minute details related to taxation!

Volume 4 Issue No. 1 of 'Brainwave: A Multidisciplinary Journal' has been published on March 30, 2023. This quarterly journal is the product of Branware University's determination to facilitate scholars, researchers, resource persons, and practitioners to come on a common platform and to share their findings of the research so that informed decisions can be taken to improve future research activities.
Dr. Sankar Gangopadhyay, Vice Chancellor, Brainware University and Editor-in-Chief, Brainwave: A Multidisciplinary Journal leaves a short message for the contributors- "I congratulate all the paper contributors. I am also thankful to the members of the editorial board, reviewers, and all the stakeholders of the journal for their productive efforts."

Several local people were present in the campus of Brainware University on 'World Optometry Day'.
At Brainware University, it is believed that education gets fulfillment when it is implemented, executed, and carried out in society, leading to the welfare of society. The Department of Allied Health Sciences organised a free cataract screening camp for the local people on March 23, 2023.
The healthcare profession provides the opportunity to serve humanity and establish a connection with people belonging to all sections. The Optometry students interacted with the patients and conducted their eye checkups and cataract screening.
The students in aprons were the ray of hope for a better vision - A ray of hope for the society!

There are colours flying in the air and one can hear innnumerable renditions of the popular song Baswanto Eshe Geche in the campus. Well, it is evident that the 'Festival of Colours' is here! The Holi festival is celebrated every year with much fervour and gusto, however, this tradition of celebration becomes all the more unique and special in the colleges and universities. The students of Brainware University have also put up with this tradition over the years. A number of activities took place on the campus on March 6, 2023.

The International Women's Day was celebrated with a lot of pomp and grandeur at Brainware University on March 9, 2023. It all started with the inauguration of 'Brainmagzi', the wall magazine of the Department of Computational Science. The wall magazine was yet another canvas to bring out the creative spirits of the students.
It is a fact that each of us witness different roles in our lives. The objective is to build a healthy atmosphere where all genders will be mutually respected! The occasion started with a mesmerising jugalbandi based on Tagore and Nazrul Islam's perception towards women! The university drama club Proscenium once again put up a brilliant performance in its signature style highlighting how women have been put under the shackles of patriarchy and how they have broken free from these shackles!

Texibition 2K23: The techies brought together!

The annual tech fest of Brainware University 'Texibition 2K23' took place on Febraury 28 and March 1. The event was organised by Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Tech Club and Google Developer's Students' Club of the university. Prof. (Dr.) Debashis De, Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, MAKAUT, West Bengal and Sayak Paul, Developer Advocate Engineer, Hugging Face, inaugurated the event.
With 'Texibition 2K23', the campus of Brainware University witnessed a conglomeration of new ideas, creativity, and innovations. Students from various institutions participated in the events lined up for the programme! The students were impressive with their prototype models in 'The Architect' and 'The Ideate', the idea competition. The excited group of students was enthusiastic with 'Legends', the gaming competition, and the coding competition 'Bluster'. Colleges can be fun, every time everything does not have to be academic!

Mushroom farming is one of the most profitable agribusinesses in India that can be done with low funding and constrained space. Dr. Sayantan Ghosh, HOD, Department of Biotechnology, Brainware University participated in 'Unnati Mahotsav and Expo' organised by IIT Delhi on March 17-18, 2023.
Dr. Ghosh made an insightful presentation on 'The Technology of Hybrid Mushroom Production'. The presentation was well-appreciated by the members of IIT Delhi and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA).
During his visit, Dr. Ghosh also made some fruitful conversations regarding the training for mushroom cultivation with various reputed institutions like Alagappa Chettiar Government College of Engineering and Technology, Tamil Nadu; NIT, Srinagar; NIT, Silchar and others!

Awareness programme in rural areas on women health related diseases

According to Global Nutrition Report 2017, 51% of Indian women between 15 to 49 years are anaemic while according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India’s Maternal Maternity Ratio (MMR) is at 113, which means there were 113 deaths per 1,00,000 live births between 2016-2018.
It is still taboo to discuss about women's sexual and reproductive health in many parts of the country, especially the rural areas. In an attempt to aware the rural population on women's health-related diseases, the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology organised an outreach activity at Prithiba Gram Panchayat. With the door-to-door visit, free medicines and sanitary napkins were distributed among the women.

The colours of happiness were late but they arrived in the lives of the inhabitants of Apnapan Home for Girls, Barrackpore. The Department of English and Literary Studies organised an outreach activity in collaboration with Mahajibon NGO right after Holi!
Apnapan Home for Girls, Barrackpore is an Old Age Home and Orphanage under Barrackpore Avenue Women Cultural and Social Welfare Society. A group of students from the Department of English and Literary Studies accompanied their faculty members to this orphanage and old age home to donate commodities of daily usage like clothes, books, stationeries etc. with them.
This outreach was a small attempt to stretch a hand of hope towards the underprivileged individuals and shower them with the ray of happiness!

An Exam-Ready Reckoner Book for the Law Students: Our LLM student comes to the rescue!

Remember those days when, when a friend used to explain any topic better than any professors just before an examination.
Our LLM 2nd-semester student Subham Chatterjee is one such student. However, his objective is to help the students with exam-ready guide! His latest book titled 'Constitutional Law - I: An Exam Ready Reckoner Book for the Law Students' is one such example.
"While the constitutional law happens to be the mother of all laws, no book is complete in itself to understand the varying dimensions. I have tried to write this book from the viewpoint of students so that they don't juggle up during exams," says an ecstatic Subham Chatterjee.
International publishers of repute Red'Shine Publication has published the book.

Scripting a success with SCOPUS publication

It was yet another success story for our faculty-student collaboration. This time with a publication in the SCOPUS journal - 'Asia- Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering'.
Mahima Mutsuddi, an M.Sc student from the Department of Biotechnology collaborated with Dr Deepshikha Datta, Associate Professor cum Academic Associate, Department of Chemistry to contribute for the paper titled, 'Jute fibre reinforced unsaturated polyesters laminate preparation using eggshell filler'.
Dharmana Tejeswara Rao from the Department of Chemistry of GMR Institute of Technology and Deepak K. S.and Bimal Das from the Department of Chemical Engineering of NIT Durgapur, were the other contributors for this paper.

It was a proud moment for Hrishikesh Barman, a 6th-sem B.Pharm student from our university when he scripted a success story at 'Pharma Anveshan 2023' organised by JIS University by bagging the 3rd position!
The hard-working, ambitious boy from Cooch Behar gave a presentation on 'Cardiogenic Shock and Drugs'.
A lack of oxygen in heart, usually after heart attack causes Cardiogenic Shock. In case of such a situation, heart suddenly cannot pump enough blood to meet body's needs.
With Hrishikesh's presentation, people got to know the causes of the shock and the application of drugs in case of such a shock!

A Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) demonstrates knowledge of assessing the security of computer systems by looking for weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems. A CEH uses the same knowledge and tools as a malicious hacker, but lawfully and legitimately to assess the security posture of a target system.
It gives us great pride to inform you that three of our M.Sc students from the Department of Cyber Science and Technology have passed Certified Ethical Hacking (CEH) conducted by the EC-Council.
Rajarshi Roy Chowdhury, Kanu Guchhait and Ankit Mukherjee have passed the CEH examination with flying colours and move a step forward to be a part of this gigantic network to provide cyber security!

Article on prisoners' rights by LLM student gets published in the book titled 'Indian Criminal Justice System: The Need for Radical Changes '

"Prisoners enjoy the same human rights as ordinary citizens," this was concurred by Kanwaljit Deol, Indian police veteran and former Director General (Investigations) at the National Human Rights Commission; Vrinda Grover, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Sergey Kapinos, Representative, UNODC Regional Office for South Asia in a UNODC discussion.
LLM student Avimannu Das' chapter on 'Contemporary Inquisition on the Rights of the Prisoners Under Article 21 of the Constitution of India' explored the rights of the prisoners in India. Das quotes the Dharmasashtra in his article saying 'no person is born a criminal but the situation turns up against him then he commits the crime and becomes criminal'.

So, how was the newsroom experience for Ayan Mukherjee?
The M.Sc 2nd-sem student from the Department of Media Science and Journalism completed one-month internship with one of the leading dailies of the country, 'The Times of India'. Ayan worked in the editorial department of TOI digital! The internship provided this budding journalist with various scopes of news reporting, press conference coverages and a sneak peek into the newsroom.
Crime reporting has been the interest area for Ayan who wishes to become a crime reporter in future!
