|
Workshop on Environmental Temperature Linked to Pollution, Cancer and Covid-19
|
|
The Department of Biotechnology, Brainware University, celebrated National Pollution Control Day 2020 on December 2, 2020 at 5PM by organizing an informative workshop on Environmental Temperature linked to pollution, cancer and COVID-19.
The workshop was intended to educate students on the need for environmental protection and sustainable living. Dr Chandi Charan Mandal, Professor, Central University of Rajasthan was the guest speaker for the evening.
Dr Mandal began by explaining that the risks of global warming are well-documented and accepted in the scientific community. Why is there no substantial measure taken against it in the face of such evidence? “Most of us see it as a far-off thing in the future. Climate change is happening now, its effects are being felt now but we are not registering it. We are choosing not to,” he stressed.
The discussion ended with a Q&A session. On being asked if he found the session useful, Joydeep Pal (BSc. Biotechnology, student) replied, “I have grandparents with a history of pneumonia. This will help me care for them. It will also be helpful in my studies as I am interested in exploring climate studies later on.”

Probability is the building block of most of revolutionary technologies. From Machine Learning to Artificial Intelligence, probability works as the basic foundation. With the objective of making the students more knowledgeable about the fundamental concepts related to probability and statistics, the Department of Mathematics, Brainware University, organized a workshopon Basics of Probability Theory on December 21, 2020 at 4.30PM.
Dr. Debasish Dey, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Dibrugarh University, initiated the discussion with the basic terminologies of probability theory. “Whenever we’re unsure about the outcome of an event, we can talk about the probabilities of certain outcomes. Probability is simply how likely something is to happen.” added the speaker.

One-day workshop on “Cyber Security & Ethical Hacking”

|
Few skills have captivated the younger generation in this decade like Ethical Hacking. With its ever rising popularity and its acceptance as a viable career option, the department of Cyber Science & Technology organized a one-day workshop on “Cyber Security & Ethical Hacking,” on December, 15, 2020.
Guest of honour and certified ethical hacker, Mr.Sagar Neogi, faculty member & research analyst, ISOEH, started his session by explaining the social responsibilities of hacking. “To be responsible is always very important and the same applies to hacking too,” he said. As he went deeper into the topic various technical aspects of hacking were explained by him. He pointed out different types of SQL injection techniques such as Error based SQL injection, Blind SQL injection, Boolean based SQL injection and Time based SQL injection.

Workshop on Be a Better Version of Yours

How can students improve their weaknesses and craft a successful future? Do insecurities have to be permanently debilitating? Renowned transformation coach and mentor, Mr Biplob Bose shared with Brainware University students the secret sauce behind a fulfilling life and career in an online workshop organised by the Department of English & Literary Studies, Brainware University, on December 3, 2020 at 5PM. The workshop, entitled Be a Better Version of Yours, aimedat helping students smoothly transition from university to the professional world.
Mr Bose, who has mentored corporate professionals across the globe, pointed out three crucial things forpractising self-mastery — “unflinching self-knowledge, honest focus on improving weaknesses and the know-how to identify and grab opportunities define a successful life,” he said.
How can this self-knowledge be acquired? “It doesn’t happen overnight,” Mr Bose was quick to reassure students, “you need a lot of grit and compassion for yourself. Beyond these, just start by doing a SWOT analysis where you plot out your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats to create a road map to yourself,” he said.

Workshop on Entrepreneurship Development Phases

|
To help the budding business graduates understand the phases of entrepreneurship development, Institution’s Innovation Council, Brainware University, conducted a workshop on Entrepreneurship Development Phases on December 24, 2020 at 4pm.
The key speaker Sriparna Guha, Assistant Professor, Department of Management, Brainware University, initiated the discussion on the basic difference between entrepreneurs, businessmen and industrialists. She then focused on the entrepreneurial requirements, the prospects and possibilities which come with entrepreneurial ventures in the contemporary world. “Capital is a primary requirement if you want to launch a business. Generally we suggest first-time entrepreneurs to secure funding from government sources since the interest rates are relatively low,” she said.
She familiarized the participants with the essential steps required in order to launch a successful entrepreneurial venture. “One needs to be persistent, creative, and goal-oriented. The journey is going to be a tough one so you need to motivate yourself and your team,” she advised.

IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) and innovation has entered into the common parlance in the age of start-ups. In spite of this, first-generation entrepreneurs face significant challenges in dealing with legal complexities that come with starting a business. To provide our students with a set of expert-approved guidelines, the Institution’s Innovation Council, Brainware University, organized a webinar on ‘Intellectual Property component at the early stage of innovation’ on December 19, 2020 at 2 PM. Renowned IPR lawyer Mr Anjan Sen, Principal & Managing Patent Attorney, Advocate, Anjan Sen & Associates, was there to guide our future entrepreneurs on how to protect their innovation from unfair use.

To find the answer to these questions the Central Libraries of Brainware University and Brainware Group of Institutions jointly organised a workshop on ‘Do Librarians need to be SMART’ on December 10, 2020 at 4.00 PM.

Magnetic Drug Targeting to Cure Cardiovascular Disorders

To make the students aware of the mathematical models used for magnetic drug targeting to cure cardiovascular disorders, the Department of Mathematics organized a webinar on ‘Magnetic Drug Targeting to cure the cardiovascular disorders – Mathematical models’ on December 10, 2020 at 5:30 PM. Mr. Sachin Shaw, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mathematics and Statistical Sciences, Botswana International University of Science and Technology, was there to grace the occasion.
He enlightened the students on the ways in which the ratio of the non-dimensional pressure parameter and the tendency of the carrier particle to be captured in the tumor position is calculated. Shaw showed the relation between the surface area of the carrier particle and the volume fraction of the magnetic particle and its influence on the overall delivery mechanism.

In this fast-paced world of technological advances, it is very important to stay in touch with modern trends. The Department of Multimedia organised a workshop, Photography – Portrait with TTL Flash, on the recent developments in the field of photography on December, 7, 2020, to train the students in the modern aspects of the same.
Photography expert, Mr. Argha Chatterjee, introduced the Through The Lens (TTL) flash and trained the students in its various uses. He elaborated how the TTL flash helps improve numerous technical aspects of photography and gives a far better end result than normal flashes. “TTL greatly helps to improve photography, especially portraits,” he pointed out. Mr Chatterjee continued the workshop by giving the students in depth knowledge of lighting and other aspects of portrait photography. He said that with proper technique of camera and flash usage, the artist would be able to make their environment speak for themselves.

The Best Practice to Get Rid of Network Security Attacks

Cyber security is a growing market in the IT field. To make the students aware of the different network security attacks and how the CND course that is developed by EC council helps in mitigating these attacks, the Department of Cyber Science & Technology organized a one-day workshop on ‘The Best Practice to Get Rid of Network Security Attacks’, on December16, 2020, from 2.30 PM to 4.00 PM. The webinar aimed at studying the several network security attacks in the field of Cyber Security and its deep impact on several sectors of our society.The key speaker of the webinar was Aditya Jain, a renowned cyber security professional. He started the session by explaining basic concepts of network security attack and the different kinds of security threats. “Not all threats are the same and hence you need to identify the security threat to neutralise it promptly,” he said.

Virtual Industrial Visit to Kalyani Water Treatment Plant

Industrial Visits are crucial for providing students with a working understanding of industries and the work culture. COVID has made it difficult to organize industry visits but the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering, Brainware Group of Institutions, found a great alternative and organized a virtual tour to make sure the students did not miss out on this vital part of their training process. On December 5, 2020, a two-hour virtual visit to the Kalyani Water Treatment Plant was conducted.
The visit was planned to help civil and mechanical engineering students learn about the latest technological and structural innovations implemented in the functioning of a water treatment plant. Since Kalyani Treatment Plant supplies water to five municipalities, extra precautions need to be taken to ensure its structural integrity. During the tour the students were given a close-up of the machine-guarding and the other safety measures in place.

Workshop on ‘A Brief Introduction to Sales Analytics’

|
Sales Analytics is the practice of generating insights from sales data and predicting future sales performance. Students need to possess this vital skill. To give them hands-on experience in sales analysis, the School of Management and Commerce, Brainware University organized a Workshop on A Brief Introduction to Sales Analytics on December 12, 2020 at 2:00 PM.
Mr Abhirup Roy Choudhury, Sales Analytics Manager, Mcnroe Consumer Private Limited, the guest speaker, discussed how sales analytics was driving the current market. “Companies are able to predict their next quarter sales using it. They are even able to comfortably guess the performance of a new product using sales analytics. No wonder it is a skill all companies want you to have,” he explained.

Workshop on ‘Migraine the Changing Landscape’
|
|
According to a NHS survey, migraine affects roughly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 15 men. It is therefore a health problem that is fairly widespread and is a commonplace affair for healthcare professionals. To give students a thorough understanding of the condition and treatment of migraines the Department of Allied Health Sciences, organized a workshop on ‘Migraine the changing landscape’ on December 12, 2020 at 5:30 PM. The guest speaker, Dr. Abhijit Das, a consultant neurologist at the Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, UK, dispelled the myths and fallacies surrounding migraines and its treatment.
While discussing the ways to manage migraines without medical intervention Dr Das suggested, “migraines can be kept at bay using lifestyle modifications like sleep and proper exercise. Decrease in screen-time can also help but results vary widely and it takes time.”

Digital transformation as the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business resulting in fundamental changes to how businesses operate and how they deliver value to customers.Interest in the term digital transformation has skyrocketed in the last couple of years as businesses look to remain digitally agile and up to date with the rapid changes in technology.
To explain the different facets of the digital transformation journey, a workshop on ‘digital transformation journey’ was organised by the department of Physics of Brainware University on December 15, 2020. The session was graced by the presence of Mr. Soumalya Mondal (Solution Architect, Wipro) as the key speaker.

Workshop on E-waste management: scenario, challenges and opportunities

|
Faster upgradation of electronic product is forcing consumers to discard old electronic products very quickly, which, in turn, adds to e-waste to the solid waste stream. The growing problem of e-waste calls for greater emphasis on recycling e-waste and better e-waste management.
To raise awareness about this issue, a workshop on‘E-waste management: scenario, challenges and opportunities’ was organized by the Brainware University Internal Quality Assurance Cell(IQAC)in collaboration with Hulladek Recycling on December 17, 2020. The session was enriched by the presence of key speaker Prof. Sadhan Kumar Ghosh, President,ISWMAW & Professor, Jadavpur University.

The pandemic has brought pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors into the limelight. Public attention is focused on reports of various vaccine trials and drug efficacy tests. At a time like this, pharmaceutical students must know the different tools used to analyse and improve drug quality. To enable students to grasp the basics of one such analytical tool — High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Brainware University, organized a workshop onFundamentals of HPLC and its applicationson December 5, 2020 at 5.30PM.
Uttam Kumar Mandal, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Technology, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, Punjab, discussed the fundamentals of instrumentation and operation of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), a commonly applied separation and analytical technique used in the field of Pharmaceutical Technology and other Biomedical Sciences. Pharmaceuticals products such as aspirin, ibuprofen, paracetamol, sodium chloride and potassium phosphate, along with organic chemicals like polymers, are separated and individually assessed through this method.

Workshop on ‘Proceedings in Magistrate Court: Hierarchy, Trial and Bail’
|

To provide a deep insight into the functioning of the legal systems, a workshop on ‘Proceedings in Magistrate Court: hierarchy, trial and bail’ was organized by the Department of Law, Brainware University on December 12, 2020. The guest speaker, Ms. Paromita Das (LL.B), Assistant Public Prosecutor, Class-1, Gazetted Officer, Govt of West Bengal, was invited to grace the occasion. The session was conducted through Google Meet with more than 80 participants.
After an initial introduction by the host, Mr. Soumik Ash, Ms. Das took over the session and discussed the entire trial process vividly. Speaking of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (Cr.P.C), she said, “Cr.P.C. is a comprehensive and exhaustive procedural law for conducting a criminal trial in India, including the manner for collection of evidence, examination of witnesses, interrogation of accused, arrests, safeguards and procedure to be adopted by police and courts.”

Workshop on Orientation Session on National Education Policy (NEP)
|
|
India’s first Education Policy was passed and implemented in 1986. After thirty-four years, the National Education Policy (NEP) for India has been updated, revised and approved on July 29, 2020.
To make students aware of the various aspects of this policy, a workshop on Orientation Session on National Education Policy (NEP) was organized by the Institution’s Innovation Council in collaboration with Brainware University on December 22, 2020.
The audience was enlightened by the key speaker, Prof. Sanghamitra Kundu (Director, IQAC, Brainware University) who began the session with a lively icebreaker interaction with the students. She then explained the difference between innovation and invention which led to the ultimate discussion where she talked about the various facets of NEP.
Prof. Kundu shared the vision for Higher Education in India – 2020 with a focus on three main elements i.e. students enrolling in the Higher Education System, Holistic and Multidisciplinary Education and Educational Technology, and Online Education. She also shed light the new curricular structure i.e. ‘4+3+3+2+3’ as well and its implications in the higher education scenario.

Workshop on Orientation Session on National Innovation and Startup Policy (NISP)

|
Universities have become major springboards for startup launches and innovation. To encourage startups and help guide our student entrepreneurs, the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) at Brainware University organized a Workshop on Orientation Session on National Innovation and Startup Policy on December 31, 2020 at 3.00 PM. Dr Shivnath Ghosh, Associate Professor & IIC President was the guest speaker for the session. The aim of the webinar was to introduce the basic framework of the National Innovation and Startup Policy and its importance for faculty and students to help kick-start their entrepreneurial projects.
Dr Ghosh recommended students to perform a self-reflection exercise to pinpoint their major goals. “Take a minute and think about your mission in life and frame it in a sentence. This is going to be your North Star in all life projects,” he advised.
NISP is an attempt by the government to “create a lively startup ecosystem in universities and it is in your best interest to make use of the funds,” he advised. NISP framework is already operational at most institutions. The session ended with Dr. Ghosh urging students to get in touch with the IIC and start working on their plans.

Workshop on Motivational Session by Successful Entrepreneur
|
|
Keventer has now become a household name in West Bengal. The eastern India-based food company has carved out a separate brand identity of its own with its wide portfolio of food products — be it dairy items, frozen food or branded bananas.
The company has gone on foraying into newer verticals under the able stewardship of Mayank Jalan, Chairman and Managing Director of Keventer Agro. To motivate students with the story of his success, Mr. Jalan spoke as the guest speaker in a workshop arranged by the Brainware University & Institution’s Innovation Council on December 04, 2020.
In a free-flowing conversation, he recalled the time when he joined Keventer in 2004. The company was running into losses. But under his able leadership, Keventer not only made a turnaround but also gradually increased its top line to more than Rs 1,000 crore.
On being asked he managed to achieve so much in so short a time, Jalan said, “I did it by making 10,000 mistakes which hopefully others should not make. Every day is about learning — learning from your mistakes. Every day is about facing challenges, and every day is about giving your 100 per cent to make sure that you deliver the best that you are capable of.” He credited his team for Keventer Agro’s successes.

Towards A Better Beginning
|
The year 2020 has been one of unexpected losses and disaster due to the COVID-19 situation. Humanity has been brought down to its knees due to the raging pandemic and we have been forced to remain isolated for the fear of infection. With a credible vaccine still far away, working online and physical distancing seem to be the only viable alternatives. Let us fervently pray to the Lord this Christmas for His grace and do hope that the coming year would bring in a much needed air of reprieve.
